College students having mental health issues do not always get the help they need. They tend to get scared or freeze up when talking about it with someone. No matter what the age, people should be open to talking about this topic because it will benefit them.

Dylan Colussi is a sophomore here at Oakland University. He knows about the stress that college and becoming an adult can bring. But sometimes students do not want to seek out the help they need for their mental health.

“They feel embarrassed by it,” Colussi said.

Oakland University should be a welcoming and comfortable place for students whether they live on campus or not. Matter of fact, Colussi lives here on campus where he finds it easy to access the help people may need and would not make any changes to what the university has going on.

“I find it pretty easy to access it so I wouldn’t make any changes.” Colussi stated.

Here at Oakland University, there are many resources that are available and easy to access. If a student needs help and wants to be in contact with a counselor, all they need to do is look up, OU Counseling Center, and you can schedule an appointment right on the webpage.

Along with the counseling center, you can contact the Dean of Students and there is a whole catalog with mental health services that people can go to and get the help they need.

There can always be improvements implemented to anything in the world. With mental health becoming more talked about on the everyday, and even on college campuses, Colussi thinks that everything in the mental health realm is great.

“I don’t think anything needs to be added as of right now, I like the system for finding resources,” Colussi said.

But with all the good that goes on with Oakland University and mental health, there could always be something to improve upon. Mental health is talked about a lot at the beginning of the semester. But it seems to be forgotten at the end of the semester.

“I hear about it at the beginning of the semester each semester but it could be talked about slightly more,” Colussi said.

As the semester goes on, students need reminders for these types of things because they are so focused on finishing the semester. But if students get the mental health help they need, they can not only finish the semester, they can finish it strong and in a positive manner.
